I’m going to start my HP 15-ba009dx – 15.6″ Laptop Review with the following thought: HP aims to bring the basic laptop activities with a reasonable prices in this sub $300 model. We get good space and decent capabilities to handle most your standard applications such as word processing and web surfing. Not too good for gaming or heavy duty production, but HP managed to fit a lot of substance into a very reasonable price.
HP went with a single color scheme for this model so I hope you are a fan of black. The outside features a lined design that looks good but is nothing spectacular. 15.6 inches and rounded edges this laptop doesn’t stick out much. Pardon the pun but the point is there are none. Weighing in at 4.74 pounds this laptop is as light on size along with its color diversity. With the lined design continuing inside the overall appeal is nice if only a bit simple.
This model houses a AMD Quad-Core A6-7310 APU processor with a native speed of 2 Ghz. So don’t let the quad core fool you this processor is on the low end for modern laptops. With a maximum speed of 2.4 ghz this laptop isn’t for anyone who has a need for speed. All that said the processor is perfectly suitable for low end multitasking. Running word processing, web surfing, and all your media programs at the same time shouldn’t be an issue. Your only issues will come in when you run programs outside of this models range which might be an issue for gamers or software geeks.
Here we have a integrated AMD Radeon R4 graphics card for any of your low end gaming needs. The Radeon R4 card is comparable to the Intel HD 4200 series which will be serviceable for most games running on low settings. At only 128 bits the card doesn’t have the speed to run with newer models but will still be a bit better than many low end laptops. Older games will be able to run at a decent frame rate but don’t expect more than 50 frames per second and you’ll be fine. Still a very sufficient card for casual gamers.
HP fitted this model with 4 gigabytes of DDR3L-1600 RAM which is probably perfect for everything else in the model. This isn’t a high end computer so 4 gigs is pretty much all you will ever need for the things you can do with this pc. Upgrading won’t be too much help thanks to all the integrated components. This amount of speed will be adequate for basic operations on a computer especially with the quad core processor we have a very efficient model built for getting the small stuff taken care of. There is no way to turn this computer into a giant killer but it’s not going to sweat the small stuff either.
Continuing the trend with this model HP chose to go with functionality over any bells or whistles. This model houses a 500 gigabyte 5400 rpm SATA hard drive. That’s pretty good for a mechanical hard drive but nothing to the benefits a solid state drive can provide. 500 gigabytes is a lot of space but also requires some power so you will lose some speed and battery power that a SSD would provide. When purchasing you need to ask yourself whether storage space is more important than overall speed because if it isn’t you should look else where.
HP went with a pretty standard 15.6 inch SVA Bright View WLED HD backlit screen. The maximum resolution is 1366 x 768 which is on the low end for modern laptops but for this models beggars can’t be choosers. Bright View technology ensures crisp clear visuals in most environments but can be an issue in highly reflective areas without any anti glare technology. Overall we have a serviceable screen that shouldn’t be an issue with the purchase.
With a model focused on functionality, HP chose not to skimp on this models individual features. We have a HDMI port for multiple monitor connectivity. Three USB ports including two 2.0’s and one 3.0 for the ten times faster speed. There is also a RJ45 LAN port along with a 802.11bgn wireless card which is slower than the newer model but shouldn’t be too much of an issue as many people still run the older wireless connections. We have a standard optical drive for reading CD’s and DVD’s along with a camera for web camming. HP efficiently traveled all of the bases with this model so do we have a home run?
Value for Money
I might of been critical in this review but HP pretty much makes up for most of that with an extremely low price point. This model retails around $240 dollars for a computer that can do all of the basics really well. Ten years ago this would of been a decently high end model so it’s perfect for someone on a budget who doesn’t have an issue with living a bit in the past. A 2 gigahertz quad core processor is really nice to have for under three hundred considering you will probably spend at least double that for a quad core processor that’s only a bit faster overall. HP is still a great company if you are looking for affordable functionality in your laptop.
HP 15-ba009dx – 15.6″ Laptop Review Conclusion
HP has delivered a really nice starter laptop in this model. It doesn’t have any off the charts capabilities but makes for a value heavy package. (Look also Acer Aspire E5-575-33BM) . They effectively answer each question with just enough until you get to the price where the full value of the bargain is apparent. Focusing on efficiency over power we have a machine that quietly checks the boxes. The processor RAM and video card together mean you will be able to at least try out most programs even if you won’t be able to experience them at their highest level. It might be a little hard to open up and upgrade but it’s not super necessary as the model is made to efficiently lock into place at the just enough spots where even if it’s not enough, it still isn’t bad.
