Core Hardware Configuration

Dell I3558-5501BLK Review

The overall configuration of this laptop is suitable for a multitude of tasks. The central components like the processor and RAM are sufficient for serious programming or to do a professional level of work.

Let us first start off by discussing the processor. The Intel Core i5-5200U (2.20 – 2.70 GHz) is not just a powerful mid-range processor from Intel but is also ultra efficient. Thanks to this processor, Dell I3558-5501BLK has a battery life that can last for 6 hours, which is more than the average. Why is this so?

Well, if you have done your homework on Intel Processors, then you will know that ‘U’ designated processors are low voltage variants. Due to this, they not only run cooler but also offer much longer battery lives.

Does this have a negative effect on the performance? The short answer is yes. The U designated processors are slower than their other counterparts such as the ‘M’ designated ones. However, most of the laptop processors have already been replaced by Ultra Low Voltage variants.

Plus, with the turbo boost technology, the processors can clock their speed to the peaks when needed. So when you are working hard, you can expect a higher clock speed as supposed to idle states.

There are 7th Generations Processors Out Already!

Yes, your concerns are understandable. Why go for a laptop that offers a processor that is two generations old. The simple answer is performance/dollar value. The 5th generation processor is much cheaper with a marginal difference in performance in comparison. Thus, the laptop has an awesome price tag.

As stated earlier in this Dell I3558-5501BLK review, this laptop has 8 GB of RAM. If you have been following this blog, you will know that I always recommend at least 8 GB of RAM if you are remotely into professional work. This laptop fulfills that criterion.

Unfortunately, the RAM is DDR 3. This is a shame as DDR 4 RAMs are already out in the market. Albeit, the difference is marginal in performance between the two.

8 GB of RAM installed is more than sufficient to complement the great processor of this laptop. In fact, 8 GB is just the perfect minimum for core i5 processors. Anything less would mean that it would bottleneck the processor, anything more would mean the processor would bottleneck the RAM. Therefore, 8GB is just perfect for a great multitasking experience.

Like most laptops of this price range, Dell I3558-5501BLK does not offer a dedicated graphics card. It does; however, have an integrated graphics card the Intel HD 5500. This is nowhere close to being a capable graphics card.

Therefore, obviously, this is not a laptop that you will use for graphics designing work.

Furthermore, what also sets this apart is a touchscreen display at this price tag. Since touchscreen has become a new norm in all portable devices, it only makes sense that the same technology is applied to laptops across all categories.

With the touchscreen, all your applications will be a touch away from your fingers. To add to this, this notebook works on Windows 10 operating system, which is optimized and a dedicated touchscreen operating system.

Additional Features

Dell I3558-5501BLK Review

A laptop is really useless if it is not portable. The definition of portability implies that it is both thin and has a long battery life. Fortunately, Dell I3558-5501BLK features not only a 6 hours battery life, but also a profile that is less than an inch thick at its max.

Furthermore, this laptop has a plethora of connectivity options such as USB 2.0, 3.0 and HDMI ports. It also offers connectivity and interfacing via Bluetooth, Wifi, Ethernet, and Media Card reader. Finally, this laptop boasts an optical drive as well as a Webcam.

Perhaps the only relative drawback of Dell I3558-5501BLK is the lack of a dedicated graphic card. Well, at this price range you can’t really ask for than what this laptop already delivers.

Value for Money

Although Dell I3558-5501BLK  is a great laptop, it does have competitions. One of the biggest competition to this laptop is the HP Notebook 15-ay011. For a few dollars more, this laptop offers a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor and a screen that is FHD. Unfortunately, it is not a touchscreen.

Is it Suitable for Programming?

You can most certainly consider this laptop as a decent programming laptop. The hardware of this laptop is designed for intermediate levels of programming. You can work on all sorts of professional software. The processor and RAM should be able to handle most professional level of works without any hassle.

Dell I3558-5501BLK Review Conclusion

In conclusion, Dell I3558-5501BLK   is a well-priced and powerful lapop with a touchscreen. If you are looking for a laptop that has the capacity to handle a decent level of workload, then this is a right laptop for you.

However, if you are looking to get a laptop for simple word processing or internet surfing, then I would rather suggest you go for cheaper laptops. This is a laptop that is beautiful in design, portable in terms of profile and powerful when it comes to hardware.
