Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop Review

Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop Review

What I’d like to say in my Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop review first of all: this laptop by Acer is dripping with style that encompasses the entire machine. From the exterior to interior a attention to detail and a passion for flair are quite apparent in this laptop. This is the type of gaming laptop that can actually run with the desktops in terms of the quality of performance you should be able to squeeze out of this rig. From the processor to the RAM to the video card not a single step is missed on the journey to creating a superb gaming laptop.

This machine has the abilities to run with whatever type of program you are trying to use and follow through admirably. The only downside here is the price tag above one thousand dollars that will probably scare away the casual consumer. However this computer isn’t made for the casual consumer, its made for the gamer who knows what they want and needs to be able to enjoy brilliant graphics on the go.

Once you get into the domain of higher end laptops the design becomes one of the most important factors for the user and this model does not disappoint. Acer makes a pretty good attempt at an Alienware clone with a futuristic design that brings a level of sharpness, and ferocity that you won’t see in many laptops.

This machine looks mean, sleek, and powerful before you even begin looking into the specs thanks to its red and black motif with sinister curves. For the keyboard you have multi colored back lighting on these ultra responsive keys. They are well spaced and you even have WASD highlighted because this is a gaming computer first and foremost. Backing up that idea you have Acer’s Predator Frostcore technology that brings the great cooling you need for a gaming rig. The venting system sends air both ways to help prevent dust build up over time increasing your systems shelf life.

The cost for all of this impressive technology is a slightly heavier laptop over 8 pounds which only sounds bad when you realize most laptops are under 5. Overall though the design is outstanding and thats just one of those things you will have to deal with as laptops get closer to the desktop level.

Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop Review

The predator is the type of name where you would expect it to be a monster at every point, but with the focus on design and graphics, it only makes sense that there would be an area where it lags behind. With an intel core i7-6700HQ processor, this is the laptops one low area.

The good thing is its only low in comparison to the other specs and still quite fine in conjunction with the rest that you will still get great performance. This processor has four core HQ performance and the ability to overclock at 3.5 ghz. On most laptops, this would be a fantastic addition, and it speaks volumes that it is this models biggest issue as far as premium quality goes.

The alpha and the omega of any gaming computer is its video card, so the predator comes with a nice set of fangs. Here we have a nVidia GTX 1060 graphics card. An extremely powerful card just a touch under the top level and about as affordable as you will find before you start approaching two grand and up for laptops.

This card comes with six gigs of built in GDDR5 RAM to handle the screen content without putting too much stress on the rest of the rig. An effective 22 total gigs of RAM means outside of the most taxing games performance should not be much of an issue. Especially when you throw in this computer G-Sync compatibility for synchronization with your screen.

While the processor provides the heart of the computer, it is nothing without the RAM to provide the blood, the life force that keeps everything functioning at an appropriate speed. 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM surpasses the common breakpoints for computer speeds. Where 8 is hardly enough 12 is good, and 16 is currently well over whats needed for most applications. So in conjunction with the quality DDR4 upgrade over DDR3L, you shouldn’t have many issues as far as the RAM is concerned. Compare with best laptops for programming.

When you are over a grand and still about to break the half century mark this is an area that you can not get wrong. You have to combine speed and storage space here or the premium quality of your laptop goes down the drain. Acer remembered this and included two hard drives to make that combo work.

We have a 256 gig SSD for the four times faster speed it provides along with a 1 terabyte HDD to hold onto all of your precious files and programs. A necessary combination that allows us to make another positive check.

Additional Features

This VR ready laptop is loaded with goodies that round out this model into a powerful force against the competition. We have the Frostcore cooling as mentioned above along with a Killer DoubleShot Pro network utility that allows you to designate how your bandwidth is used.

With the Predator sense gaming control panel you can easily adjust settings and shuffle through presets for a setup that works for you. A powerful speaker system pumps out surround sound and even includes a subwoofer. Of course, you also have a nice assortment of USB, HDMI, and Lan ports for connectivity. Along with a disk drive and sd card reader for maximum utility.

Acer Predator 15 Gaming Laptop Review Conclusion

The first issue for anyone with this laptop will be its price. As long as that isn’t enough to turn you away every other aspect of this model is strong enough to keep up with almost anything a gamer puts it through.

They took a step back on the processor in order to make this laptop a solid A minus when it comes to gaming laptops. Since the cost to reach an A plus is likely another thousand dollars this is a really nice point to hit. Only serious gamers need to apply here, and they won’t go home unhappy. Look at Dell i5577 on Amazon and our Acer Aspire F 15 review to compare.
