Here we have a Dell monitor that truly sits in a league of its own as far as the monitor universe is concerned. We step outside of the high tier low priced models into that area where every monitor sits apart on its own unique high tagline due to its unique group of attributes. For this monitor that attribute is Dell HDR which allows for visuals a large step above what you will see even in many top end monitors.
The super high resolution allows for Quad HD graphics that do not know how to disappoint. There are some negatives though outside of a price above five hundred bucks a bit there are other issues that put a damper on this model. It’s not the fastest or very gamer friendly but the utility and visual quality are off the charts. If you have a lot of money ready to burn on a beautiful monitor this one might be the perfect fit.
Design and Features
When it comes to an amazing appearance sometimes you can not put a price on it, and that is what Dell sought to achieve with this model.
The design is ultra futuristic and practical down to the curved support on the back that leads to a sharp base. You get all 27 inches of screen with this monitors virtually borderless design. All that screen space does not go to waste on this IPS display with its industry leading visibility. Moving right along we have a high caliber resolution of 2560 x 1440 granting you gorgeous 1440P Quad high definition visuals that will put most televisions to shame. Terrific resolution is nothing without great colors to back it up and this Dell has you covered.
Here we have a 1000:1 contrast ratio coupled along with an above average 300cd/m2 brightness score to give the user that full range of color depth that they expect in a high-end monitor. The real special factor when it comes to visuals for this model is the trademark Dell HDR capabilities. Most monitors are only able to achieve 350 nits of brightness at their peak. Dell HDR allows for 1000 nits of brightness allowing for an unrivaled picture quality that stands a cut above the competition.
Usually, I am not a fan of Dells because I find their models too often be over priced for the features included but this one delivers. This makes this model a great choice for anyone who does graphic work as it will give you a level of realism and color clarity that has few comparisons. 16.7 million colors and over 99 percent sRGB coverage make every single millimeter of the screen pop visually.
This monitor has two major downsides when comparing it to other high-end monitors. The first is the speed with a 6 millisecond response time that’s kind of disappointing considering 5 ms is the standard and most high tier monitors have 4 ms response time. The refresh rate is also extremely average at 60 Hz when there are monitors out there with over 200. The second downside is the lack of gamer’s specific features such as G-Sync. This alone is enough to make a gamer’s move on considering the hefty price tag. Everything is here for the visual specialist especially if you major in still images.
When a monitor cost over $500 dollars it better have a nice list of extra feature to justify the price point and thankfully Dell delivers.
For your standard monitor connectivity, we have an HDMI port. After that it gets kind of crazy, a monitor is not supposed to have so many USB ports but I doubt you will mine especially since this model is designed to effectively organize your cables in a convenient manner.
Here we have two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.1 port, and a USB Type C port giving you the type of escalating utility that most monitors can only dream of. Dell keeps the customer in mind with a security lock slot and a 3-year limited warranty to cover any hardware issues that happen to rear their ugly head. Of course, there is a headphone jack and the monitor is great at adjustments. The base allows for pivoting and tilting to suit its users need.
One thing is for sure, this model does not disappoint when it comes to a variety of utility.
Dell (S2718D) S series Conclusion
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be the best looking one in the room and Dell appeals to those who share this sentiment. You have to be willing to splurge as this model is not for the faint of heart with its a few hundred dollars price tag. However, it does pack all of the utility you would expect for a monitor that pushes that type of boundaries. Not to mention an absurdly high picture quality that is sure to amaze and inspire awe.
The beauty continues into an overall design that reminds you of something you might see in a live action Jetsons reboot. If you can get over the fact that the speed is pretty poor for its price and it does not have any gamer friendly features then open up your pocketbook and dive in to this gorgeous visual experience.
