Asus is always an interesting brand to review a product from thanks to the incredible variety they have produced over their long time in the industry. This leads us to products that sometimes disappoint while others perform beyond expectations for the pricing while generally they hit their intended target pretty spot on. This is once again the case here as this monitor sits close to around $200 dollars so you want more than just the standard bells and whistles on a low end monitor. This model accomplishes this task by providing a large screen size and good response time to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack. It is not the perfect package but depending on what you are looking for it should do quite well for an affordable monitor.
Display and Features
Once you cross the mid point of that hundred dollar range there are certain things you expect to find in the design for a monitor and they are apparent here. The first and most important is a thin bezel for the frameless design that allows you to seamlessly adapt multiple monitor setups or just enjoy using your monitor with the satisfaction that you are getting close to the amount of screen size advertised. Here we have a super thin frameless design all around as even the monitor is only 7 millimeters thick. To add on to the sleek look we have an icicle gold base which should appeal to those who want more style than the traditional all black. This leads into a black cylindrical base for a sweet look. The only issue here is the gold can be a bit reflective so watch those eyes.
Colors and Resolution
The highlight of this display is its impressive 27 inch screen size that pushes the limits of under $200 dollar monitors. Coupled with IPS and LED backlighting the color quality of this monitor is definitely one of its stronger points. While you can find monitors with 16.7 million colors and a 80 million to 1 dynamic contrast ratio for less, what makes this one special is its 27 inch screen. That being said the visual quality is nothing to shake a stick at and should leave most customers happy. We have full HD 1920×1080 resolution to help round out the package putting this monitor on the high end for picture quality in low end monitors.
You will still have to deal with some IPS bleeding on the edges, but that is just the cruel reality that comes with the majority of IPS monitors. It only becomes an issue up close however and at any rate should not be a deal breaker. There has to be a price to pay for that 178 degree viewing angle.
If you are interested in an affordable monitor that can handle gaming then this one should suit you pretty well. While to 75 hz refresh rate is not spectacular especially when it can dip to 50 depending on your resolution that is pretty common for monitors in this range so you can’t be too mad. On the plus side we have a super fast 5 millisecond response time. When you consider the most common upgrades are 4 or 1 millisecond and they can get a lot worse, 5 is pretty good. Especially since those upgrades will be overkill for most users. Thanks to the color quality and brightness of the monitor it does pretty well for graphic design though it is still quite average here for monitors in this price range.
When it comes to special features we have 8 separate viewing modes for different types of activities. From games to movies the variety is nice though most people will probably stick to a couple modes or just make their own customized mode. We also have some nice features with eye care in mind. A combination of blue light and flicker free technology helps this monitors matte display make even less of a negative impact on your eye health.
The range of viewing modes is interesting, and eye care is nice even if it is pretty standard for monitors around this price. This leads well into the connectivity because it also does not bring anything special. We don’t have any USB ports and you are starved for variety in connection due to only having a couple port choices. We have a D-Sub port and two HDMI’s which is probably all the general customer needs though it does limit your options.
ASUS VZ279H Frameless Monitor Conclusion
This is the type of monitor that will catch your eye thanks to the design and color choices though it does not deliver too much to make it stand out other than that. It is great to see a monitor with a 27 inch screen and great picture quality under $200 dollars which is not very common unless you are dealing with Asus. The fact that they have so many similar monitors at this price range with similar specs happens to make this one stand out a bit with the icicle gold, however when you compare it to the others it becomes pretty clear that it is mostly a stylistic choice. So the question becomes for anyone set on a sub $200 dollar 27 inch monitor, do I want the stylish one or the more classic one with better connectivity and maybe one better feature? Beauty or the beast?
