AOC 1659FWux was the first portable display by AOC which used IPS panel. Basically, this was the main change from the previous models and although we could expect better from a company which is an expert and world leader in monitor production, AOC 1659FWux turn out to be a very good portable monitor and we included it into a list of top 9 portable monitors to buy in 2018.
It’s worth to mention that it’s not the cheapest option among medium-size category. It also delivers full HD resolution for just $150. So let’s see how AOC managed to make this 15.6 inches 1080p model so cheap and what it had to sacrifice for that.
Specifications and features
|Panel Size||15.6”||Panel Type||IPS|
|Brightness||220 cd/㎡||Refresh rate||60Hz|
|Contrast ratio||700:1||Response time||25ms|
The main difference from other portable monitors in the same category is that it uses only one cable and it's USB 3.0 and not becoming very popular USB-C. Still, it requires your laptop to have USB 3.0 port otherwise this monitor become useless.
8W in typical mode and 0W in standby is somewhat usual numbers for an USB-powered display.
It goes in line with a further set of standards and regulations (cTUVus, CE, FCC, RoHS, EPEAT, Energy Star®, Windows 8/10 compatible).
Design and ergonomics
It's a compact display made mostly of plastic. As you can see from its measurements 9.21″ (H) x 14.76 mm (W) x 0.9″ (D) height and width are relatively close to any other 16 inches portable display, but its depth is thicker. Unlike many others display you will need to find an extra half-inch of space in your laptop bag to carry this monitor. Also, keep in mind, it weighs 2.6 lbs, which is not that light in present days, apparently its weight closer to a very thin laptop than to another monitor. Still, it's not so hard to carry and normally you will find a room for it in your bag.
On a back of the monitor, you’ll find a swivel stand which helps you to prop up a monitor in different positions. These positions don’t include a portrait mode. The task “how to fix it in a portrait mode” designers left for you to solve.
On the whole the design is nice and simple. The black color is always good but shiny surface makes scratches, fingerprints more noticeable.
Another plus is that this device requires only one cable to connect, hence it’s more space on a desk and it’s easy to set up.
Performance and Set-up
So it's very easy to connect and start using it. All you need is to install DisplayLink software (you can find it on CD or download from the Internet) on your machine in order for the monitor to work. Besides CD with drivers AOC gives you another cable for a connection with a dual input in case one USB port on your laptop won’t provide enough energy.
Theoretically, AOC I1659FWux can automatically recognize vertical or horizontal orientation, but in practice, it works only with Win 7, Win 8 otherwise you’ll need to change orientation manually in your laptop settings.
Having USB 3.0 as the only port we cannot demand a lot from its performance. It delivers the “required minimum”: images are colorful and crisp, you might notice some loss in color reproduction on dark, grey areas of the image but you won’t notice any loss viewing from different angles. Surprisingly we have to say that it performs better than a newer model from AOC – I1601FWux. If you won’t use it under the sunlight you might even do some photo, image editing on this screen. The only big downside is time response – 25ms. It doesn’t only make it impossible to use for gaming purposes and also might seriously affect all real-time apps.
