Sitting sweetly right below the mid range price comes a powerful, stylish, and petite laptop that is sure to make even the most knowledgable computer experts gush. It should not be much or a surprise with Acer’s experience on the market that this model continues to impress. The budget computer shopping will get a lot easier for you as long as you don’t mind a smaller laptop because from the stylish design to the materials on the inside and out, Acer has stepped their game up. This is not the perfect laptop, but for its price it will be hard to find many that will offer better value.
For such a small laptop it is nice to see that Acer put in the work to make sure that the design was stellar. The full silver with a few choice black areas gives this laptop a sleek futuristic look that draw attention to the best part of this laptops design. Rounded edges and stylized lines are nice and apparent, but the best part about this model is it is all metal. This provides some strength that is not familiar to the budget laptop market. On top of that this model is super light and ultra thin standing as a guiding light for budget laptop design.
Since this laptop is so thin the choice for components favors a small size over bulkier heavy duty options. We are missing an optical drive in the quest for sleek simplicity. Everything is placed well in standard spots so you don’t have to worry about awkward setups.
For the processor Acer suited this model with a Intel i3 7300U processor. Running at 2.4 ghz we have some considerable speed and power for carrying the bulk of the workload. This ensure that you have super fast run times for the types of programs that this laptop is built to handle. Once you get towards the higher end programs you will have issues. Though as a work computer or for a college student this processor is strong enough to excel at the majority of activities in conjunction with the other components.
As is per usual for a budget laptop do not expect anything too crazy from the graphics processor as that is once of the major pieces that separates the battle lines on the laptop market. Here we have a Intel HD 620 HD graphics card that is going to eat into your RAM putting a serious bar on high level gaming. Even towards the mid level you will need to turn down your graphics settings. This is a really standard card with nothing special about it though with a RAM upgrade you should not run into many issues when it comes to reasonable gaming on this rig.
This is the biggest issue with the package even though it is pretty standard for the lower priced laptops. Here we have 4 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM which is enough to get by for basic computer activities. Upgrading to at least 8 gigabytes will provide a nice boost to make sure everything runs as fast as it can especially if you want to use this computer for gaming. When it comes to things such as internet browsing and Microsoft Works the RAM will work well for productivity, just watch out with your multitasking.
This is a section that makes this laptop great for the budget market while also serving a bit of a double edged sword. The nice edge is you get the speed of a solid state drive that helps this computer perform activities much faster than any low end laptop should. On the nasty edge we only have 128 gigabytes of space to work with which most users will be able to fill up in a year or less depending on their usage. This is another area where you might want to spend some money for a external hard drive. I will still take a low space SSD setup over a standard hard drive any day of the week though for the speed.
Just when you thought Acer has done enough we come to the screen that is small and could be brighter. However those are small issues when you consider the full HD capabilities that make this screen standout for the lower range. If that wasn’t enough it is also IPS for a nice little upgrade to the traditional LED-Lit screens that frequent this range.
Once again this laptop does not know how to disappoint. We have high speed Wi-Fi, a super long ten hour battery life and a backlit keyboard. We also have great connectivity past your standard HDMI and SD card reader to three USB ports including a USB type C. A HD Webcam and Acer’s fingerprint reader and TrueHarmony sound system round out a nice list of features.
Value for Money
If you haven’t been paying attention this is a pretty impressive model for around $500 dollars. This is toward the higher end of the budget market, but thanks to the SSD, full HD screen, an dynamic design it is well worth the price. When you throw in every other aspect being at or above what you would expect for the price range their isn’t too much to complain about when it comes to the value discussion.
Acer Swift 3 Review Conclusion
Make sure you are not confused by the praise because this is not the perfect computer for everyone. It is not great for gaming or graphical work and hyperactive programs can bring it to a screeching halt. However for those searching for a budget computer particularly college students or workers on the go you can’t do much better. This computer is small, light, stylish, sturdy, and powerful making for an impressive combination as long as your sights are not set to high.
